water
Janhit Foundation takes a three pronged approach to dealing with water issues in Uttar Pradesh. This approach is based upon ensuring that all our work in this field has a positive effect on the people living within our society, in addition to enhancing environmental conditions.
Provision of safe drinking water
We ensure that marginalized urban and rural communities receive an adequate supply of safe drinking water.
Water
We work to tackle pollution problems at source, install a piped water supply to replace the old India Mark II handpump and maintain access to clean water for the entire community.
Water conservation
A large part of our work focuses on restoring and reviving natural water resources. Uttar Pradesh is blessed with a network of rivers, ponds and canals, however encroachment is commonplace and many lie dry. In conjunction with various partners we have been working to revitalize these structures in order that communities may utilize them for agricultural and other such purposes.

We promote the use of clean technologies such as rainwater harvesting as a solution to what is an ever increasing water shortage. This helps to re-charge depleting groundwater levels in the region, in addition to providing surplus water for domestic use.
Mitigation of water pollution
Waste discharge from industrial premises is commonplace in India. At present, the legal system offers little threat to those industries systematically polluting the environment.

Water contamination is consequently a major issue, with vast numbers of industries discharging untreated waste water directly into the groundwater and the many rivers in the region. Janhit Foundation works to tackle these problems by confronting the industry with hard evidence of the damage which they have inflicted upon both the environment and in many cases, human health. We can tell many success stories where this action has led to a community partnership between industry and local people to resolve issues of environmental degradation.
